  • What If I Had Labs Performed During My Pregnancy?

If you had labs performed during pregnancy, that is wonderful. There are obvious differences physically during and after pregnancy, and, similarly, there can be differences with lab findings as well. We may or may not run various labs based on how you are feeling and your desires.

  • What Are Some Big Differences with Lab Findings During and After Pregnancy?

A major difference between during and post pregnancy can be mineral deficiencies. A specific element or mineral to note – copper – can be drastically depleted in you after pregnancy. Copper is a critical mineral which helps regulate oxygen correctly within the body. During the last two months of pregnancy, a baby will drain this important mineral to help itself grow. Just as in a power grid to power your house, copper is needed in ample amounts to regulate electrical flow within the human body.

  • ICT Muscle & Joint Clinic’s Post-Partum Rehab

Our Post-Partum Rehab Program is for any woman who is experiencing or has experienced post-partum complications such as urinary incontinence (unwanted urination), low back pain, neck pain, and more. Post-partum is a time of re-establishing the ‘core’ of the body so that a firm foundation will be laid by which to build on whatever activities the woman desires to return to.

Pregnancy can be a wonderful experience for some women while absolutely difficult for others. Sometimes, it appears there is no rhyme or reason. It is well understood and communicated, that additional supplements may make the experience more comfortable and healthier for the expecting mother and child. What is not well understood or communicated is physical post-partum care.

  • What Post-Partum Care Currently Entails

Currently, post-partum or after delivery care consists of a 6-week check-up with an OBGYN or midwife. A mother and her surrounding support network are to monitor the mother’s emotional state, looking for depression or psychosis complications post-delivery. The female body will go through rapid physical, chemical, and emotional changes post-delivery. These problems can occur and are quickly addressed through various hormonal interventions.

  • What Post-Partum Care Does Not Currently Encompass

Unfortunately, post-partum care does not focus on how well the female body physically recovers during this 6-week period. Many women will admit, if possible, they would like to have their “old” body back and this can add to psychological frustrations. We are emotional beings; one thing affects another. If we can improve the physical state of the mother, it stands to reason her emotional state might be improved also. Frustrations and human experiences are rarely linear and/or logical in their conclusions.

  • Why ICT Muscle & Joint Clinic Believes Addressing Post-Partum Care Is Important

The lack of post-delivery care, regardless of method (vaginal or C-section) has always astounded us. The general standpoint is “congratulations you’re a mom, we will see you in 6 weeks!” Let us highlight this in another way. If Patrick Mahomes blew out his knee (knock on wood), the recovery would not be, “welp congrats, we will see you in 6 weeks.” The comparison is asinine to contemplate.

Delivery of a child is the most physical and mental athletic event a woman may undergo throughout her lifetime. The current post-partum standard of care regarding hormonal control is wonderful; however, the physical rehabilitation is not. This is why we believe addressing post-partum care should improve, and women who received this had significant improvement in post-partum incontinence (or unwanted urination).1

ICT Muscle & Joint Clinic’s Post-Partum Care Protocol

For us, our goal is to fill this 6-week gap and tackle helping mothers reclaim their bodies. We do this through an integrative system, identifying the starting point of care for each woman. As stated earlier, women have different experiences and outcomes through the delivery system and to address all women as the same is inaccurate and a disservice.

Different women may have different starting points, from delivery to physical recovery. To think a woman who hemorrhaged during labor compared to another woman who had a picture-perfect delivery will start at the same time is ridiculous. Typically, the woman who hemorrhaged might start sooner. Recovery is more complex than one variable and so are women.

The Starting Point of Our Post-Partum Care Program

We must identify standards and/or starting points. For us, we look at delivery method and potential OBGYN approval of the delivery procedure and then move into restoring ideal breathing and basic stabilizing patterns.

We utilize our DNS training, which is based on pediatric neurology to help the brain-body connection find each other again. We will work through restoration of breathing patterns, rolling patterns, sit-stand patterns, then dynamic body weight exercises (jumping, throwing, and pulling), and finally into loading strong basic movements such as squats and deadlifts.

This is getting down to the basics and owning them. Strong mommas are our game! We need this for our society! Accountability here is everything too. You, as the momma, come to intentionally move your body. Some days this might not seem like much while other days are physically or more so mentally exhausting

  • Vaginal Delivery

In an ideal world, we prefer to start the assessment process 7-14 days post-delivery. Those first 7-10 days are crucial in creating a bond between momma and child, as well as allowing the chemical cascade to neutralize as much as possible.

  • Cesarean Section: C-Section

We would want to start an assessment within the first 21 days. Remember, after the first 5 days post trauma, the injured cells move from the inflammatory phase and into the proliferative phase. This latter phase is where we want to start doing some level of therapy. If we miss this window, recovery may take longer. Think of it as scar tissue. If the tissue lays down inappropriately, a woman may face longer recovery times. The main issue we try to avoid, from scar tissue trauma, is incontinence (unexpected episodes of urination). Post-partum incontinence is common in our society, but it is NOT normal!

Does Insurance Cover Pregnancy and Post-Partum Care?

Your insurance will cover the physical rehab aspect of care. It will not cover specific aspects of our nutritional consulting. These services are typically not recognized as medically necessary which is your insurance companies’ standard approach to covering care. The current model of healthcare is based around medical necessity not prevention or optimal health and function.

Our Post-Partum Care Method

We attack the weak conventional model head on. Recovery will look different for each woman. We do not expect your recovery as the same compared to another or even between one pregnancy to the next! There might be overlap in exercises induced at certain times post pregnancy, but there is a part of tailored care.

What’s Your Next Step?

There is much more to the picture surrounding pregnancy and health. Hopefully, this information gives you a taste of the difference in our information and the standard. Pregnancy Info and Nutritional Consulting by Our Pregnancy Chiropractor

Congratulations on expecting! Motherhood is a joyous and challenging experience all tied into a thrashing, spinning tornado. There is much information surrounding pregnancy – don’t eat this, take this prenatal, you need to supplement iron, etc. However, much of this information is wrong and is being blindly followed. We believe healthcare practitioners are doing what they feel to be best with the information they have been taught. This is where the problem lies, in the information being taught. Our approach toward pregnancy: what is normal during pregnancy and how to help you as an expecting mother, is very different than the standard of care. Our goal is to help you, the momma, fully understand pregnancy and empower you to take control of your health during and afterward.

  • Misunderstanding of the Literature Surround Iron Supplementation and Pregnancy

The most significant misunderstanding surrounding pregnancy is iron. Iron is not necessarily your friend We understand this is a heavy hitter in the world of pregnancy health. Often many women, especially pregnant women, are prescribed some form of an iron supplement to avoid or treat anemia. There is strong literature highlighting iron levels in the blood are not iron levels in the tissue – the amount of iron stuck in the tissue (organs) can be up to 10 times higher.1 Taking a one-sided approach when looking at iron creates a huge problem – it creates a logical fallacy. Iron has become ‘stuck’ in the tissue and is not being mobilized. This is an iron re-cycling issue, not a low iron or anemia issue. Our reticuloendothelial system, AKA iron recycling system, is 95% efficient at recycling.2 If this is true, and iron has been fortified in almost all our food products,3 it does not make sense to be low in iron. It only makes sense that there is a recycling issue. This is one area we address through our nutritional counseling.

  • Misunderstanding of Iron and Red Blood Cells

Healthcare has made another logical fallacy regarding laboratory readings. Women have blood work done during pregnancy and will be given information back regarding their results. Sometimes women will be diagnosed as ‘anemic or borderline anemic’ and therefore advised to take an iron supplement. This is a logical fallacy. To mobilize iron into hemoglobin (protein which carries oxygen) of red blood cells (RBCs) there needs to be an enzyme called ferrochelatase.4 This enzyme is a copper-controlled enzyme. This enzyme moves iron into the RBC. The iron does not simply do it by itself.

As an easy visual, imagine you are building a factory. Iron is used as a raw building material. To move iron into place to build the factory, a crane operator (ferrochelatase) picks up the iron and puts the iron where it needs to go. As it relates to the body, to mobilize iron into hemoglobin correctly within the RBC, you need a balance of copper to iron5 6 – not just supplementing with iron. Supplementing with something – iron – that is also enriched in all food products, should make a person stop and question. Is the valuation of iron of which I am being told, correct?

  • Why Is Supplementing with Iron Not Healthy for Mother or Baby?

So far, iron sounds terrible. But without iron, we would die. We do need it. The problem comes with the quantity we consume in our daily eating habits already plus supplementation. We are not working to balance iron levels – through bio-available copper – or working to restore the recycling system, which is 95% efficient at recycling iron. All of this allows iron to create massive distress inside your body.

Too much iron or improper recycling of iron in the body causes rusting – AKA inflammation. As an illustration, think of an iron rod outside in your yard left alone. Under the presence of oxygen and water, the iron begins to rust. This rusting - oxidizing – is also what occurs inside your cells. Stuck iron is bad.

Inflammation is noted as ‘oxidative’ stress. This is what causes free radicals within our body. Free radicals or Reactive Oxide Species (ROS), come from the improper handling of oxygen being converted into energy for our cells. Dysregulation of iron causes free radicals before anything else.

Mineral Balances and Pregnancy

Almost all women hear, ‘wait a couple years at least between pregnancies. The reasoning behind this is a baby will significantly drain the mother of minerals within the last two months of pregnancy. Add the physical stress of carrying more weight, restless sleep, learning to nurse a newborn and this leads to more mineral loss. Pregnancy is hard on the mineral balances of a momma. Having adequate mineral balances – for women – is very important to sustain life within. One single mineral of great importance is magnesium. Magnesium is known to regulate 3,751 known enzymes, proteins, and hormones. ATP, our bodies energy source, does not become activated without magnesium. Having adequate levels of magnesium is vital for life of both mother and child. The typical reference ranges on labs for ‘normal or adequate’ magnesium for RBCs is too little in reality. This brings us back to the fallacies we have seen with reference ranges on lab testing and our societies trust in these lab test reference ranges.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - Symptoms, Causes and Treatments Explained

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is the diagnosis before the ‘bad diagnosis’ – cancer, organ failure, etc. Chronic fatigue can be paraphrased as, we do not know what is wrong, but something is wrong1. If you are experiencing longer than 6-months of fatigue during activity or rest, restless sleep, memory, focus and concentration difficulties, then you may be diagnosed as chronic fatigue syndrome. If you are experiencing these difficulties, do not wait until it progresses. If you are experiencing this now, ignoring the problem will only make it worse. Unfortunately, when left untreated, it will become something much worse in time.

Schedule Now

What Cause Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

Chronic fatigue syndrome is the byproduct of various organs and pathways not working correctly – all at the same time. The are many nuances within this which is why it’s being listed as a syndrome. However, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome broadly means your body and its cells cannot produce adequate energy for the demand being placed on it.

How Does ICT Muscle & Joint Approach Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

Like all things, our treatment approach largely depends on the mechanisms causing the stress within the system. Regardless of what specific avenue we may venture down, we work through various protocols to address the energy leaks within the system.

At the most basic level, chronic fatigue is the byproduct of cells not mixing food and oxygen correctly to produce energy. By assessing and testing at this most basic level, we can address the river which is poisoning the streams. If cellular respiration, which occurs in all cells to produce energy, besides red blood cells (RBCs), has gone haywire then hormones, organs, enzymes, and other aspects will not work or regulate the body’s systems correctly. We focus on chronic fatigue syndrome by analyzing upstream at the river, not downstream in the streams.

  • The Importance of a “Balanced Diet” for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Without a deeper dive into your weekly nutritional ‘regiment,’ we cannot identify the holes within your eating habits which may be leading to your chronic fatigue. There are various pathways and organs which need to regulate the mixing of your food and oxygen to produce energy. If the foods you eat are not supporting these pathways and organs, you are going to face massive challenges. You cannot outrun poor eating habits.

When looking at sustainability of health and eating in addressing chronic fatigue – elimination diets do not work. What works for one person may not work for another. Assessing and testing adrenal glands, thyroid, liver, and genetic expression may be the answer for you. Our consults are unique in offering a comprehensive approach in understanding what is causing your chronic fatigue and the best scientific-backed research and methodology in getting you the results for which you are looking.

  • The Importance of Mineral and Vitamin Levels for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Through your eating habits, and lab work if needed, we look into mineral inadequacies. Think of hormones (AKA enzymes) as your vehicle and minerals as the keys to your vehicle. You can have a Ferrari sitting in your garage, but if you do not have the key to start your Ferrari, then the Ferrari is useless – AKA no energy.

  • The Importance in Genetic Expression for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Genetics is a booming industry for health. Genetic testing will lead the way, in not only guiding you to an ideal eating program for optimal health but also understanding your genetics will help you understand why your body responds better with variations of food, supplements, and medications. Genetic testing will be a game changer for so many and will revolutionize healthcare. You may have different genetic variants being expressed which are not allowing your body to currently produce energy efficiently. Through genetic testing, we can identify these expressions.

Treating the Symptoms or Treating the Cause of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

The problem with all these conventional, mainstream medical approaches to chronic fatigue syndrome is simply in the name – it is a syndrome of unknown origin. Chronic fatigue syndrome is largely looked at as a disease-state not as an energy producing inefficiency. By looking at energy producing pathways and their respective regulations, chronic fatigue syndrome becomes more apparent as an inefficiency to produce energy.

Chronic fatigue syndrome will not go away or truly get better without addressing the underlying problem. We must separate short-term benefits from long-term gains. Traditional approaches are not working when zooming out and looking at longer timeframes. If you have been experiencing long bouts of fatigue, poor sleep, memory, focus, or concentration difficulties, asked yourself, is what I’m doing working? If there feels like no end in sight with treating your fatigue issues, maybe you should ask yourself – is there another way? The answer is overwhelmingly yes.

We can help you rebalance your energy producing systems naturally, but are you ready to make a real, long-lasting change to your health? is the better question.

Genetic Testing

Get your genetic testing supercharged with us. Genetic testing is going to change everything within health and healthcare. When genetic testing first came on the scene through 23andMe and AncestryDNA, data was all over the place. Unless you really understood what you were looking at or looking for, it was difficult to make sense of it. Fast forward a few years and various programs have now really made headway to make sense of who you are at a deeper level.

Start Your Genetic Testing

Why Should I Get a Genetic Test?

This is a great question. For some, it’s simply fun to know. For others, by understanding your genetics we can understand why certain medications affect you differently, or negatively, why you cannot process certain foods, vitamins, enzymes (proteins), and hormones correctly. By understanding you at the genetic level, we become snipers, positioned to target your health desires effectively and efficiently. We are taking the guesswork out of the elimination diet.

Genetic Testing for Health Problems

83 million different known variations of genetic expression

Genetic testing for health problems can be life changing. Imagine this, you are taking medication for whatever reason. The medication you are taking is not working, or worse having negative side-effects; however, this medication is supposed to work. Ever wonder why? This can easily be due to your genetic variation.

All humans are 99.9% exactly the same at the genomic level. All variations we see and experience amongst us is a 0.01% difference. That said, there are up to 83 million different known variations of genetic expression. What if the medication you are taking is not working due to your genetics? This can be a significant finding. The field studying this is called pharmacogenetics. Pharmacogenetics looks into how different medications work differently within individuals based on specific genes. Understanding your genes can be life changing in eliminating pain for the long-haul.

  • Genetic Testing for Blood Pressure

Our genetic testing will look at over 1 million genetic variants for blood pressure. This is huge and helps us understand you, your blood pressure, and potential medication compatibility at a much deeper level.

  • Genetic Testing for Health and Wellness

Genetic testing for health and wellness goals can be very similar to genetic testing for health problems. When looking at genetic testing for health and wellness goals, it can be important to understand how your body is capable of creating, regulating, up taking, transporting, and breaking down different hormones, proteins, sugars, etc. based on your genetic code.

Think of all the elimination diets you have tried or are currently working through – one of these diets may be better for you than another based on your genetics. If there is a nutritional program better for you, but with a tweak needed, we can better understand this by looking into your genetic code. This can be drastically important to explaining why certain individuals do better with different eating regiments, or supplementations compared to others. Understanding your goals and desires, we can better target nutritional eating programs and supplements to help you not only restore your health but optimize your health.

  • Genetic Testing for Pregnancy

Regarding pregnancy, there is so much occurring – hormonal changes, food cravings, belly/core shifting, etc. By understanding your genetics, we can better help accommodate your wants and needs. There may be certain food cravings due to your body not regulating a specific chemical pathway correctly or that pathway being suppressed or in overdrive due to the developing baby. With understanding how your body processes various pathways at the genomic level, we can identify these and help give you specific eating and supplementation protocols – not blindly – but with precision.

Is My Information Safe?

Your information is as safe as it comes. The genetic testing used has world class encryption, full HIPAA-Grade security, EU GDPR safe, and genetic date is anonymized.

Gut Health

Understanding and Improving Gut Health

What gut health is and what gut health looks like are still within their infancy of understanding. Most of healthcare at this time believes in the importance of gut health. The idea and application of gut health, nutritional advice, fad diets/eating programs are constantly changing every few months.

For better or worse, by the time you read this vs. the time we wrote this, there is a good chance there have already been various fad diets which have newly become mainstream. We work beyond the fad diet programs and get you back to the idea – you are what you eat. We are about assessing, testing, implementation, and re-testing. Through this approach we can better understand where you are, where you need to go, and how to get you there.

With 70-80% of our immune cells being present within the gastrointestinal (GI) system,1 we know your overall health is heavily dependent on the quality of health within your gut. No one in healthcare questions the importance of the microbiome within the gut. But what we should question is what is a “healthy microbiome” and separating short-term benefits from long-term results.

General Gut Health Advice

We strongly feel everyone would benefit from simple principles or rules which we form habits around. We have made healthcare very complicated and in so doing, we have lost the awareness around these simple principles. However, it does not have to be so. Our Top 10 Steps to Health can help you along your journey. This is a generic roadmap we feel can help the masses without making health more cumbersome.

Probiotics and Gut Health

  • Are Probiotics More Important Than Eating Habits?

Probiotics are an important factor in health; however, supplementation of probiotics should be secondary to eating habits. Probiotics are beneficial for many people due to our eating habits and the use of heavy metals and glyphosate (round-up) destroying the gut lining – biofilms. Glyphosate kills the shikimate pathway which our gut microbiome thrives on for survival2. By killing of the biofilm, you are wreaking havoc on your health.

  • Why Do Probiotics Help My Gut Feel Better?

Probiotics are “healthy bacteria.” In an essence, you give yourself healthy bacteria which makes you feel better. This is an indicator that your microbiome, gut bacteria, is not within an ideal state of health. This is largely driven by your diet. Long-term, focusing on quality eating habits will be the game changer in addressing your gut distress.

The Next Step to Addressing Your Gut Health

  • Elimination Diet(s)

There are many levels of assessing your gut health – from elimination diet to high end lab testing – which can offer benefits to your health. There will always be a new fad of an elimination diet. If one has worked for you, then great. If it worked but wasn’t perfect, then we can help in various ways.

  • Lab Testing for Gut Health

Often, when a person reaches out to us, they have already attempted to work through varying fad diets with little to moderate success. If this is you, we can help with the next step. After an initial visit, we may work with different gut health tests and genetic tests. What lab tests we may run depend largely on you – what have you tried, interest(s) with lab testing, what you have not tried, what you are willing to try, etc.

The Importance of Gut Health

Do not forget, in the end – your health is your wealth. When you are ready to take your gut health seriously, we will be here for you. For us, we work deeper. We question our approach constantly to identify stronger, or deeper parameters of health and what is best for each individual. We question ourselves not only to improve your current gut health, to never settle for short-term benefits – but for long-term health.

We utilize various lab tests and protocols, when appropriate, to discover precise foods and supplements you need to restore your gut, or microbiome, health. What we have found over the years, is much of testing is identifying what is occurring within your blood, urine, hair, and stool testing at that moment in time – not necessarily what you should do to ‘reset’ your gut health for the long haul.
