Lactate Stress Testing

testing blood for lactic acid

Lactate Stress Testing

Do you ever feel you are getting gassed right out of the gate, exhausted walking upstairs, frequent mouth breathing, feeling fatigued faster than you would expect? This can all be due to mitochondrial dysfunction. Mitochondria is the “power-house” of the cell. This is where we produce energy within the body. By testing lactic acid levels, better referred to as lactate, we can better understand the function and overall health of your mitochondria within your cells producing energy for you.

Lactate is considered the mandatory byproduct of glycolysis – the breaking down of sugars. Lactate is a major energy source for your body produced during normal metabolism and exercise. Through our lactate testing, we can understand what your resting lactate levels are – AKA your baseline – and how well your cells are regulating lactate under distress while performing exercise.

  • Lactic Acid Testing: At Rest

    $30 per Testing

Can be added as an accessory purchase during any visit or as a standalone visit.

*If you purchase the Lactate Test: Stress Test this purchase we be deducted from the program.*

  • Lactic Acid Testing: Stress Test

    $550 program

    8 sessions
Update sessions performed ~6 weeks apart.
    1 hour duration per session
Spreadsheet over progress with counseling on exercise programming

What Is the Purpose of Lactate Testing?

Lactate testing helps us understand what your body is using as fuel – fat or sugars – and how well your body is utilizing and clearing lactate. By testing your lactate levels at rest and through a stress test, we can better identify certain parameters surrounding your current state of health. With this information we can then program exercise protocols to improve the efficiency of clearing lactate within your cells.

Dig Deeper

Click on any item below to learn more about lactic acid and lactate testing.

  • What Does High Lactate Indicate?

High resting lactate levels indicate there is stress occurring within the cells producing energy. Without the capability to produce clean energy with low lactate levels, chronic stress, fatigue, and many health complications occur.

For you who struggle to lose weight, often your body is not burning fat at rest, it is burning sugars. This can cause extreme difficulty with weight loss. High lactate can be identified with our lactate testing. Researchers are looking into lactate as being a signaling molecule for cancers. Simply, we want low lactate levels at rest and while aerobic conditioning for optimal health and longevity.

  • What Is a Normal Lactate Level?

At rest, ideal lactate levels should be roughly between 0.5 – 1 mmol/L. Without equipment to analyze your lactate levels, identifying your resting lactate levels becomes impossible to know.

Depending on what type of exercise you are performing – aerobic training, anerobic training, stability training, strength training – there may be varying levels of lactate production.

  • How Can I Check My Lactate Levels?

There is equipment you can purchase for at home use. The test strips can be quite expensive and, unless you are an information junky, they are not necessarily needed. For many, it is smarter to have a facility, like ours, measure your lactate levels.

Our lactate testing protocol is different than many facilities. We are not a research facility but a healthcare clinic. Our protocol and goal for lactate testing is to test and provide relevant exercise and training feedback for non-elite endurance athletes.

  • What Are Symptoms of Lactic Acid Build Up?

Lactic acid is the byproduct of working out – hard. Strength training and running fast produce lactic acid. This produces DOMS, or delayed onset muscle soreness. By improving lactic acid clearance within the cell, a person can train harder – going longer. This is beneficial for all aspects of health from eliminating pain to restoring health to optimizing health.

  • Is Lactate Testing Covered by My Insurance?

Lactate testing is not a covered service by insurances. It is considered investigational/experimentative regarding medical necessity. Insurance does not cover preventative health, only medical necessity.

  • Why Are Breathing Exercises Important?

You inhale, you exhale. If this pattern becomes altered, then health complications occur. Your breath is the one thing we can watch at rest and identify if you are unhealthy. It is a window into your health.

The ideal respiration rate, or breaths per minute, has been demonstrated to be roughly 6 breaths per minute.1 Diaphragmatic breathing is vital to obtaining this ideal breath rate and pattern. To improve diaphragmatic breathing, training, or breath, exercise is a must to obtain this target rate.

Dysfunction of this respiratory rate can easily be seen within unhealthy individuals. Unhealthy individuals reliably breathe hard and fast. The questions at hand: is the sickness causing their hard and fast breathing? Or is the hard and fast breathing causing their sickness?

It is estimated 9.5% of the general adult population has dysfunctional breathing (DB) or hyperventilation syndrome (HVS).2 These two terms are relatively one in the same. Additionally, dysfunctional breathing affects roughly 30% of asthmatic individuals and up to 75% of anxiety sufferers.3

  • What Is Dysfunctional Breathing?

Dysfunctional breathing is a respiratory disorder. This disorder may be psychologically or physiologically based, involving breathing too deeply and/or too quickly (hyperventilation). You may also experience erratic breathing interspersed with bouts of breath-holding or frequent sighing.4 Chronic hyperventilation can be seen during sleep, rest, or physical exercise.5 3

  • Can I Improve My Breathing?

Yes, you can improve your breathing, depending on the status of your overall health. The goal may be to improve it for longevity and quality of health for your remaining years. By restoring the breath, you can physically take control and improve the chemistry within your body. The ideal respiration rate is ~6 breaths per minute. This is a subconscious 6 breaths per minute. Anyone can stretch and fake this respiration rate consciously. This is about being truly honest with yourself.

How Can I Check My Breathing Rate?

New technologies, such as the Oura Ring and Fitbit, help track sleeping respiration rate. These new technologies give unbiased data of your breath rate. We do advocate for these technologies for many other reasons; however, you can also ask a friend or family member to count your respiration rate when you are unaware.

Symptoms of Dysfunctional Breathing

Respiratory complications can manifest in many ways, including physical problems, such as forward head posture.6 Here is a list of other associated symptoms to which dysfunctional breathing may be the underlying factor7

Can I Check If I Need Help from You?

We have compiled a list of questions - feel free to download this PDF and answer the questions. The first questionnaire is the Nijmegen Questionnaire, which identifies if a person is experiencing hyperventilation syndrome. The second questionnaire helps us understand to what extent the severity of the Nijmegen Questionnaire is regarding your symptoms.

If you score 23 points or higher on your Nijmegen Questionnaire, then the questionnaire suggests you have hyperventilation syndrome and breath restoration is more important for you to add longevity and quality of health to your years.

By no means are these questionnaires stand-alone in deciding on if breath retraining is right for you. These quick questionnaires only help paint a rough draft into the spectrum of unhealthy to healthy you present with in regard to breathing dysfunctions.

Additional Equipment

  • Nasal Dilators

Nasal dilators can drastically help open the nasal airway to facilitate nasal breathing by spreading wide the entry way into the nose. These can be worn while running, working out, or sleeping.

    Buy on Amazon

  • Buteyko Belts

Buteyko Belts are designed to be easily strapped around your waist. Using a belt can drastically help you feel where your belly should be expanding through. Truly becoming aware of your breath can be remarkably difficult for certain individuals and the Buteyko belt helps to do this

    Buy from Buteyko

  • Mouth Tape and MyoTape

Mouth Tape and MyoTape are a specialized cotton, elastic-based mouth tape which can be worn at any time of the day or night. It applies around the mouth. Therefore, it does not cover the mouth while gently pulling the lips together. Myotape helps to improve snoring, sleep apnea, poor sleep quality, sport-training, while reducing exercise-induced asthma. Learning to nasal breathe is a must for overall health. Myotape can be an accessory tool to help get you there faster. If purchasing, make sure you look at the correct size. The sizes: small (children), medium, and large are not always labeled.

    Buy on Amazon

  • Core 360 Belt

Core 360 Belts are like Buteyko Belts. They are to be easily strapped around your waist. Core 360 Belts have four firm semi-circular balls on the inside of the belt which can be easily moved. The advantage of this is it is easier for you to feel expanding into the back “side-pockets” of the abdominal wall. Again, sensory or awareness is vital for restoration of breath. Some Core360 belts have internal breathing sensors to detect how well you are breathing and creating Intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) to help stabilize the low back.

Optimize Health

Optimize Health Program

Optimization can only be achieved once a sound foundation sets then holds. For our health, we can categorize it into 8 pillars. These 8 Pillars of Health must have stable foundations first and foremost.

As discussed within our Healthcare Science-Based Philosophy Page, think of these Pillars of Health as gas tanks and our programming as the miles per gallon. We want to have large gas tanks, be energy efficient (mpg), and optimize the recycling of the energy source. By doing this, a person can go the distance. By viewing your health and our system within these parameters, together we can tackle ‘qualgevity’ – quality of long life + longevity. Our optimize health programming centers around maximizing length of life and quality within those years.

Expectations with Optimize Health

Once signed up for the program, you will receive a lengthy questionnaire. Please tell us everything regarding your hopes, wants, desires, fears, etc. We want to know you, where you are at, your sticky points, and where you want to go. During the initial consultation, we will guide you through aspects of the 8 pillars to fill up, replenish, and maximize output from these gas tanks.

There will be 8 follow up visits scheduled roughly every 6 weeks. Think of these sessions as accountability sessions. We can show you the way initially, but we also keep you accountable on your journey. Within these sessions, we will identify holes in your gas tanks needing addressed and altered.

At some point throughout your Optimize Health journey, your doctor may ask you to perform different lab testing. These lab tests are not a covered service except for 2 specific tests. These 2 tests will be covered within your initial purchase. Timing on receiving these 2 tests varies depending on each person.

Optimize Health Program FAQs

Click on any item below to read answers to commonly asked questions about our Optimize Health program.

  • How Do I Know If I Should Be in Optimize Health or Restore Health?

If you are hesitant on which one, we suggest the Restore Health program. Listening to our subconscious, with this hesitation, helps guide us to which program is right for us at this moment in time. During your initial visit, your doctor will guide you to the appropriate program - regardless of which program you selected. Hopefully, this will ease your mind.

  • Who Optimize Health Program Is Not Designed For

Optimizing health can only come from a state of true foundational health. If you are having chronic complaints with gut health, sleep, movement capabilities, or fatigue – to name a few – you might not be ready to optimize your health. Our Eliminate Pain or Restore Health Programs might be a better starting position.

  • What If I Do Not Live Close to Your Clinics?

This is a great question and perfectly fine. We offer telehealth sessions which allow us face-to-face time when needed. We find good feedback with our initial consultation being face-to-face. After the initial consultation, face-to-face sessions are at your discretion.

  • Do You Offer Onsite Lab Testing?

At this time, we do not offer lab testing on site. When labs are necessary, which often are with this program to grasp a deeper appreciation of your current goals, we utilize LabCorp, Quest Diagnostics, Inside Tracker, and many other in-person or online ordered lab testing facilities or companies. Your doctor will guide you on when and which labs will be needed.

  • Program Benefits

Enjoy unique discounts compared to non-program individuals. Receive anywhere between 20%-50% off online-programs, drawings for free month(s) programming with direct referrals.

  • Optimize Health Products

Who Should Use Our Restore Health Program

This program is designed for you who feel like something is off or something is not right within your body. It may be a nagging joint pain or a lack of energy. Often, people describe this as ‘I just do not have that pep in my step I once did’ and do not want to accept ‘getting older’ as the answer.

Readiness to Change

It may sound odd to ask the question, are you ready to change? Your answer is a huge factor in deciding if this program is right for you. Habits must change. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different outcomes. This program is designed for you who are ready to make a change.

Pain or a lack of energy is never linear. It is often multifactorial. We want to understand the events which may have led you to your lingering joint pain or lack of energy. Only through understanding this can we paint a clear picture into where we may need to go.

This program is designed to restore energy or decrease joint pains by bringing the best understanding of rehabilitation and the energetic pathways of the body to help revitalize your life.

Expectations from Our Restore Health Program

We do not force anything; however, we would like you to gather as much of your relevant health history (i.e. medications, surgeries, lab testing, etc.) as possible and submit them prior to your first visit. This gives our doctors ample time to learn about you, your concerns, wants, hopes, and desires prior to your first visit.

Health is a journey without an ending – until the end. This program is designed for you who require a journey to achieve your hopes, wants, desires, and goals. We cannot and will not make a blanket statement as to when your journey will be met for these goals. Everyone is unique to this. However, we can say we will work with you in a multitude of ways to help you truly address your pain.

Throughout this program, we may have you perform tailored, at-home exercises, lab testing, imaging, nutritional consultations and examinations, various online coursework which we offer, and much more. This program is taking the bulk of what we do, how we do it, and making it remote to better help the masses.

Restore Health Program FAQs

  • What Health Complaints Do You Cover?

The sky’s the limit. We cater our services to your needs. We started off our careers as movement experts involved in physical rehab. The further down the rabbit hole we went, we identified many people were hitting limits with their physical recovery (i.e. joint pain, muscle pain, etc.) due to underlying chemical issues. Due to this, we dove deeper into the literature and research to address these chemical challenges, physical rehab strategies, breath work, and much more. Our Functional Medicine page helps outline how we approach chemical challenges. In order, we are truth seekers then health providers. If you would like to dive deeper into who we are and how we approach the body, follow us on social media and use our Library resources.

  • How Do I Know If I Should Be in Eliminate Pain or Restore Health?

The largest difference between these two programs is whether or not you have pain, numbness, or tingling occurring. If so, select our Eliminate Pain Program. If your symptoms are more toward a lack of energy and feeling of something being off, then our Restore Health Program is right for you. During your initial visit, your doctor will guide you to the appropriate program - regardless of which program you selected. Hopefully, this will ease your mind.
